Introducing LAVA: Bringing Realtime Visuals to WordPress

July 11, 2026 · BLOKS, WordPress

For the past several months I've been spending a lot of time exploring GLSL shaders—small programs that run directly on your computer's graphics processor to create realtime visual effects.

The technology has been around for years, but it's often hidden behind complicated tools, unfamiliar terminology, or software designed primarily for developers.

I wanted to make it easier.

Today I'm excited to introduce LAVA—short for Live Animations for Visual Art.

LAVA is a WordPress plugin that lets you add beautiful, GPU-powered animated visuals to your website using a simple shortcode. No shader programming required.

Whether you're building a landing page, portfolio, music website, event page, digital art gallery, or simply want something more engaging than a static background, LAVA makes it easy to add motion and atmosphere to your site.

What's Included?

The first release includes ten built-in visuals:

  • Aurora
  • Electric Field
  • Firestorm
  • Kaleidoscope
  • Liquid Metal
  • Nebula
  • Ocean
  • Plasma
  • Starfield
  • Tunnel

Each visual runs in realtime using your visitor's graphics hardware, producing smooth animation without relying on pre-rendered videos or massive downloads.

More Than Eye Candy

One of the things I've always loved about shaders is that they live at the intersection of mathematics, programming, physics, and art.

A few lines of code can create endlessly evolving patterns that never repeat exactly the same way twice.

LAVA brings that technology to WordPress in a way that's approachable for designers, artists, educators, musicians, and anyone who enjoys creating visually engaging websites.

Built on BLOKS

Although LAVA is designed to be simple to use, it's built on the same technology that's powering the growing BLOKS ecosystem.

Many of the ideas developed for Shader Studio, Shader Builder, and Shader Player have found their way into LAVA, making it both lightweight and surprisingly capable.

And this is only the beginning.

New visuals are already in development, along with additional customization options and features inspired by the incredible feedback I've received from the creative community.

If you've ever wanted to add immersive, animated visuals to your website without learning GLSL, I think you're going to enjoy what LAVA can do.

Happy creating.
